I always look forward to the photo festival in Perpignan, France. The only thing I dread is the French waiters. Inevitably, the answer to the question "Parlez vous Anglais?" will be a stern look and a firm "Non!" The Norwegian response to such a question would normally be a more gentle "Nei", adding the equivalent of "sorry" or "I am afraid not". Perhaps even a smile and raised eyebrows. That's not how they do it in France...
Well, I guess the French approach leads to less ambiguity, there is no way you'd mistake the French waiter: under no circumstances will he ever speak English. This clear and direct way of communicating is also present on French traffic signs. Entering from Spain, on the way to Perpignan, one of the first things you meet is this parking lot. Where, very clearly, people with car bombs are directed to park their cars to the right.
We kept left.
